Post-Operative Instructions After Periodontal Treatment

Helping You Recover Comfortably After Treatment

After periodontal procedures such as gum grafting, dental implants, bone grafting, or crown lengthening, proper aftercare supports healing and comfort. Many patients have questions about what to expect after surgery and how to care for the treatment area. Cornick Family Periodontics has served the Somerville community since 1966, guiding patients through periodontal treatment with clear instructions and supportive care. Following these post-operative instructions helps promote healing and protects the results of your procedure.

If you have any concerns after treatment, please contact the office at (908) 526-0545.

What to Expect After Periodontal Surgery

Mild Swelling or Tenderness

Some swelling or discomfort may occur after periodontal surgery. This typically improves over the first several days as healing begins.

Minor Bleeding

Light bleeding or spotting may occur within the first 24 hours following treatment. Gentle pressure with gauze usually helps control this.

Temporary Sensitivity

Teeth and gums may feel sensitive during early healing, particularly after procedures such as gum grafting or scaling and root planing.

Healing of the Surgical Area

The treated area will gradually heal over the following days and weeks. Your periodontist will monitor healing during follow-up visits.

Important Post-Operative Care Guidelines

  • Follow medication instructions carefully
Take prescribed medications or recommended pain relievers as directed.

  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
Do not brush or floss directly around the treated site unless instructed.

  • Eat soft foods during early healing
Soft foods help reduce pressure on the surgical area while tissues heal.

  • Avoid smoking or tobacco use
Tobacco can interfere with healing and may affect the outcome of periodontal procedures.

  • Attend follow-up appointments
Follow-up visits allow Dr. Peter Cornick to evaluate healing and ensure recovery is progressing properly.
